National Coming Out Day (NCOD) started in the US in 1988, and was based on the idea that the personal is political. The founders believed that coming out to family, friends and colleagues and living life openly LGBT+ was a powerful and effective form of activism.
The founding thought was that homophobia and ignorance can only grow rather than diminish if LGBT+ people are hidden, and that once people realise they have loved ones who are LGBT+, they are much less likely to hold on to homophobic views.
In the US, NCOD is sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign – find out more about the history and the people here.
